The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has just dropped a bombshell with a daring new proposal that could shake up the sport like never before. At a major press conference in Cardiff, the WRU announced its plan to streamline professional rugby by cutting the number of teams in Wales from four to just two. The aim? Propel Welsh rugby back to the forefront of international glory and potentially create “wildcard” World Cup winners.

This bold initiative, described as both comprehensive and coherent, focuses on pouring resources into two elite teams capable of competing at the highest level. Dave Reddin, Director of Rugby, expressed the ambition to take Welsh rugby to new heights. “It’s about focusing on winning,” he said, highlighting that the change is necessary for elite performance.

The proposal is part of a broader strategy involving five interconnected pillars. While the spotlight is on the men’s clubs, there’s an earnest effort to design a structure for outstanding talent to thrive.

Consultation sessions are set to kick off on 1 September, engaging with the existing four professional teams—Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys, and Scarlets—along with other stakeholders including the Welsh Rugby Players Association and fans. The WRU is open to discussing alternative scenarios, such as three equally or unequally funded clubs, or even maintaining four with unequal funding.
WRU Chairman Richard Collier-Keywood emphasised the importance of inclusivity in this once-in-a-generation chance to reshape Welsh rugby. He stated, “We’ve got an opportunity to create an exciting future for our game, and it’s a responsibility we take seriously.”
The findings from the consultation will be reviewed by the WRU board in October, with a final decision expected at the end of the month. Could this be the dawn of a new era for Welsh rugby? Stay tuned for more updates!
