Jealous boyfriend kills partner in fit of anger over vapor product dispute

Nathan Howells, 20, from Bridgend, found himself in court after a shocking display of domestic violence. Angered over his then-girlfriend’s refusal to buy vape liquid, Howells lost control. The terrifying ordeal saw him throw objects around a room, punch holes in the wall, and worst of all, strangle his girlfriend for 30 seconds before punching her in the head and ribs. The relationship was described as “controlling,” with Howells monitoring her phone and blocking social media access.

The victim, who bravely managed to alert a family member during the attack, now lives in fear and bears the emotional scars. Since the incident, she struggles to sleep, haunted by the memory, and constantly worries about encountering Howells again.

Howells admitted to intentional strangulation, assault, and criminal damage. His barrister argued his behaviour was partly fuelled by grief over a family member’s death and an excessive cannabis habit. The court heard he’d since found stability with a warehouse job and had been off cannabis for months.

Judge Paul Hobson acknowledged the severity of strangulation, noting its inherent danger. Despite this, Howells’ age, lack of previous convictions, and expressed remorse led to a suspended sentence of 12 months in a young offender institute, along with a 25-day rehabilitation requirement and 180 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £600 compensation and £100 in costs, and a restraining order will prevent him from contacting the victim for five years.
