A serious commotion unfolded in Merthyr Tydfil that left three police officers injured. Nathan Phillips, a 37-year-old unruly and inebriated man, refused to leave a local shop, escalating his aggression to headbutting the officers called to manage the situation. The incident started on August 8 when South Wales Police were alerted to a disruptive individual at Premier Stores. Despite being escorted out, Phillips resisted arrest and attacked the officers. One of them, PC Wake, had to be hospitalised due to serious facial injuries.

Phillips, whose violent outburst continued with threats and another headbutt while at the police station, found himself on the wrong side of the law. He not only caused harm but also displayed appalling behaviour by urinating in a holding cell. Fast forward to August 11, he was sentenced to 48 weeks in prison, charged with criminal damage, causing actual bodily harm, and assaulting emergency workers.

In the wake of this ordeal, police officials praised the courageous officers for their professionalism and resilience. They underscored the importance of standing firm against such violence to protect the community’s safety and uphold the law.

Chief Superintendent Steve Jones called Phillips a “violent, drunken bully,” pointing out his lack of remorse and disrespect, particularly for the female officers involved. Despite his aggression, the officers managed to bring him into custody, showcasing admirable dedication to their duty.
