The IFS is suggesting that the current “triple lock” system, which guarantees the state pension increases annually by the highest of earnings growth, inflation, or 2.5%, isn’t sustainable. Instead, they propose linking pensions to a proportion of average earnings to ensure fairness and prevent future poverty among retirees. 📉💼

One of the striking points from their report? A whopping 2 in 10 private-sector workers and 4 in 5 self-employed people aren’t saving into a private pension at all! Even among those who do save, many are still predicted to fall short of what they need. 😟

To tackle this, the think-tank recommends employers contribute at least 3% to your pension, whether you do or not. Plus, there’s talk of tweaking tax returns to make it a breeze for self-employed folk to save. 💡

These proposed changes could boost private savings by a massive £11 billion a year! That means a potential increase in retirement income for some by 13-14%! 📈

Additionally, the report suggests more help for those nearing retirement, like extra Universal Credit and housing benefits for older pensioners in private rentals. This could cost around £750 million annually but promises to offer the needed support for those hit hardest by state pension age changes.

Former minister David Gauke, who led the review, believes these changes strike a crucial balance between government, employers, and workers. He emphasises that pensions need wise long-term planning and a broad agreement to be effective. 👥🤝

As it stands, the government has no plans to means-test the state pension, reassuring that the pension will continue to rise with the triple lock. But with a warning from experts like the IFS, it might be time to rethink how we ensure financial safety for our future selves! 🌟
