Massive Turnout as Community Protests Revamp Plans during Holiday Weekend

Protesters are making waves in Porthcawl! On bank holiday Monday, hundreds gathered on the beachfront to oppose a massive redevelopment plan set to turn parts of the beloved seaside town into housing. The proposal includes building 1,100 homes across prime spots like Sandy Bay and Salt Lake, sparking concerns about future road congestion, strain on medical services, and potential sewage issues.

Passionate locals and visitors, backed by an online petition nearing 4,000 signatures, fear the concrete jungle replacing their cherished coastline. The protest, organised by Porthcawl SOS, saw approximately 300 participants and banners reading “concrete kills coasts” and “save our seaside.” Campaigners voiced their concerns, shared ideas for preserving the coastline, and wrapped up with a spirited rendition of Abba’s “SOS.”

Si Prosser, part of Porthcawl SOS, stressed they aren’t anti-development but are calling for a rethink to prioritise leisure facilities over housing. They envision open spaces for events, splash zones, and parks instead of endless housing, aiming to balance regeneration and preservation.

Despite public consultations, many locals and businesses feel sidelined, their voices overshadowed by development plans they believe will lead to “parking chaos” and dim the town’s charm. Bridgend County Borough Council stated the proposals aim to bring affordable homes, addressing concerns for younger residents needing housing options.

As the development debate continues, the protesters argue this issue is not just about locals, but holidaymakers and future generations too. Could this be a turning point for Porthcawl’s future? Join the conversation and let us know your thoughts!
