We’re saddened to share the news of Hefin David’s sudden passing at his home in Nelson, just one day short of his birthday. Hefin, 47, a devoted Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly since 2016, was found hanged, leaving many in shock. Despite police and paramedics’ valiant efforts, he was pronounced dead in the evening. The exact cause of his death remains unclear with results from a toxicology examination still pending.

Raised in Penpedairheol and a Cardiff University graduate, Hefin moved from being a local councillor to a respected Senedd member. During his tenure, he passionately advocated for the Valleys communities and campaigned for education access for students with additional needs. His dedication was evident in his role on the Senedd’s economy and culture committees. Hefin often spoke fondly of his family, using his platform to highlight the experiences of living with autism through his daughter’s journey.

Following the tragic news, heartfelt tributes have poured in. First Minister Eluned Morgan described Hefin as a “much-loved member of the Labour family,” honouring his pride and passion in serving Caerphilly. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed him as a “powerful voice for the people of Wales” who truly believed in opportunity for all.

Hefin’s legacy stretches beyond politics – as a governor at Heolddu Comprehensive School and a supporter of the Caerphilly Miners Centre, his impact was deeply felt. Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly tough time. His commitment to his constituents and his warm, engaging nature won’t be forgotten. Hefin David will be missed dearly.
