“Terrified Police Officer Trapped by Pig Farmer in Gated Compound”

A shocking scene unfolded at a farm in Burton-on-Rossett when two police officers found themselves padlocked inside a compound by pig farmer, Paul Billington. Responding to a report of a suspected road accident, the officers were greeted by Billington’s five dogs and a confrontational farmer who was more interested in locking them in than cooperating.

Billington, concerned about possible infection to his pigs, took matters into his own hands by barricading the officers behind metal gates. As tensions rose, the situation escalated when Billington began mocking one of the officers, who was visibly shaken and shivering with fear. The Crown Court recently heard how the incident, captured on police bodycam footage, showed Billington’s “disgraceful” antics and hostile attitude toward the officers.

The drama might sound straight out of a bizarre film plot, but it was all too real for the officers who found themselves outnumbered and intimidated. Billington attempted to justify his actions by claiming concerns over the health of his livestock, but the judge was unimpressed. With a stern warning, Billington received a suspended sentence of four months alongside orders to complete rehabilitation activities and adhere to an alcohol abstinence monitoring tag for 120 days.

The farmer is also set to compensate each officer £250 for the distress caused. In court, Billington expressed regret over his actions, which his defence argued were fuelled by alcohol and anger over the farming situation. Nonetheless, the judge highlighted the farmer’s “bullying” nature, particularly towards female officers, shedding light on his contemptuous behaviour.

Let’s hope this serves as a reminder that respecting the law is essential, and there are better ways to handle a crisis than locking up officers on duty!
