A heated debate is brewing in Swansea! Council leader Rob Stewart has taken a firm stand against two opposition councillors, Peter May and Stuart Rice, after they questioned the future occupancy of a new public sector hub in the city. This new development is set to take shape near St Mary’s Church, where the former St David’s shopping centre once stood. With planning underway by Swansea Council in partnership with the private sector, this hub promises to bring in more jobs and growth.

But not everyone sees it the same way. May and Rice, representing the Uplands ward, raised concerns about occupancy levels, citing figures that show low daily attendance in government offices. This question did not sit well with Stewart, who accused the pair of lacking faith in the city’s potential.
Stewart went on to highlight the integral role the hub will play, being a prime spot for both the council and other public sector bodies. “Negotiations are in full swing,” he said, indicating that announcements about the tenants will be made once agreements are sealed. Meanwhile, 71/72 The Kingsway, a recently completed office near the hub, is already buzzing with the likes of TUI, IWG, and Futures First.

Councillor May, however, views Stewart’s response as an attempt to deflect rather than address the real issues, hinting at previous instances of dodging direct questions.
