The UK Government is facing accusations of running a “cynical media campaign” ahead of a High Court case with Palestine Action. Co-founder Huda Ammori is challenging the Home Office’s decision to ban the group, with a hearing set for November.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper’s move to outlaw Palestine Action under anti-terror laws has sparked debate. Membership or support for the group is now a criminal offense, with potential penalties reaching up to 14 years in prison. Since the ban’s implementation in July, hundreds have been arrested, with nearly 70 charged. The Government has defended the ban, citing security assessments.

However, lawyers for Ms Ammori claim the Government is making “misleading” public statements, contradicting its courtroom arguments. They argue this reflects a lack of respect for legal proceedings and an attempt to sway media coverage without evidence.

In a recent judgment, Mr Justice Chamberlain allowed Ms Ammori’s case to proceed, citing two “reasonably arguable” points. Human rights bodies Amnesty and Liberty have also been granted permission to intervene, offering their expertise.

The controversy intensified with the revelation of months-long delays in implementing the ban, initially recommended in March but enacted after March’s alleged damage to jets at RAF Brize Norton, attributed to Palestine Action.

The Home Office hasn’t commented on the ongoing proceedings but stands by its proscription of only the group, not broader protest activities against Israel’s actions.

The drama continues as the Government is urged to disclose all related briefings since June. With court battles and public scrutiny heating up, the outcome could have significant implications. Stay tuned for the November hearing.
