In an incredible turn of events, Gena Heraty, an Irish humanitarian from Westport, Co Mayo, and seven others, including a three-year-old child, have been released after being kidnapped earlier this month in Haiti. The group was abducted from an orphanage in Kenscoff on August 3rd.

Gena, who oversees the orphanage run by Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs (Our Little Brothers and Sisters), is finally safe and well. Irish deputy premier Simon Harris expressed his relief, saying, “We warmly welcome the news that Gena and all Haitian nationals taken captive are safe.”

The Heraty family shared their immense gratitude for everyone who worked tirelessly for their release. They also thanked international and local supporters for their efforts and kind words during these difficult weeks. Gena’s family has asked for privacy as they focus on her recovery and that of those in her care.

Deputy premier Harris hailed Gena as a “deeply courageous person” and thanked all who played a part in securing the hostages’ freedom. This positive outcome highlights the extraordinary resilience and determination of everyone involved.

The situation in Haiti remains challenging, and we continue to hold the nation in our hearts, hoping for peace and safety amid ongoing violence and insecurity.

Sending our best wishes to Gena, her family, and all those who were released. Let’s continue to support those in need and recognise the remarkable contributions of all humanitarians working in challenging circumstances worldwide. 💪✨
