🌪️ Exciting news, storm watchers! The UK Met Office, alongside Met Éireann in Ireland and the Dutch weather service KNMI, has unveiled the storm names for this season. And here’s a heartwarming twist – many names come from your suggestions, honouring loved ones and even pets!

Kicking off the list are Amy, Bram, and Chandra. Amy tops the chart as the most popular female name submitted, while Dave gets a nod as a name representing snore-loving husbands. How adorable! But remember, naming storms isn’t just for fun; it’s designed to help us all pay attention and prepare when severe weather is brewing.

Did you know naming storms started back in 2015? It’s an effort to make sure we’re all on the same page when preparing for potentially impactful weather. The system skips Q, U, X, Y, and Z, and takes names from the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands alphabetically.
This year’s list includes some charming stories like Stevie, inspired by the Fleetwood Mac classic “Dreams”, and Violet, named for a little fighter born at just 27 weeks. Even our furry friends got a shoutout! One cat, Oscar, was described as a “good boy, but crazy when he gets the zoomies.”
On a more serious note, scientists like Rebekah Hicks and Alex Deakin highlight that storm names help raise awareness and save lives. With climate change causing more extreme weather, it’s vital to pay attention. Last year’s Storm Floris saw 93% of those in the warning area alert and 83% taking action!
Here’s the full list for this year: Amy (UK), Bram (UK), Chandra (Netherlands), Dave (UK), Eddie (Netherlands), Fionnuala (Ireland), Gerard (Ireland), Hannah (Netherlands), Isla (UK), Janna (Netherlands), Kasia (Ireland), Lilith (Netherlands), Marty (Ireland), Nico (Netherlands), Oscar (UK), Patrick (Ireland), Ruby (UK), Stevie (UK), Tadhg (Ireland), Violet (UK), and Wubbo (Netherlands).
Stay safe and stay prepared, everyone! 🌧️💨 #StormSeason #WeatherWatch #StaySafe
