A new report from the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has raised the alarm about potential staffing challenges that could impede this childcare expansion. The goal is for the early years workforce to grow by 35,000 by September 2025 to keep up with demand. However, despite initial growth being “on track,” the future looks bumpy if these challenges aren’t tackled head-on.

The early years sector has grown significantly, yet still faces ongoing issues with recruiting and retaining staff. One major hurdle? Pay. Early years workers earned, on average, 36% less than similar roles in 2022/23. Though there’s been a boost with wages rising £2 above minimum wage, it might not be enough to attract or keep talent in the long run.

Paul Whiteman from the school leaders’ union believes the government needs to pump up the volume on efforts to improve pay and the status of early years roles. Regional disparities also pose a problem, with varying staffing issues across different areas.

In a bid to lure more professionals, early years teachers were promised a £4,500 tax-free bonus for working in nurseries within disadvantaged areas. And while the recruitment push has been promising so far, the momentum needs to continue.

Jack Worth from NFER emphasises: “It’s crucial to address workforce challenges to make the sector attractive and capable of meeting the demands of expanded free childcare.”

The Education Department is rolling out new training routes, boosted recruitment campaigns, and high-quality training for all staff levels as part of their Best Start in Life strategy.

So, big changes are coming, and they hold the potential to be game-changing for many families. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a smoother road ahead! 🤞🌟
