A splash of excitement or cause for concern? The newly opened Aqua Park at Cosmeston Lakes has sparked a lively debate. Penarth Civic Society has voiced worries over the attraction’s impact on local wildlife, particularly pointing to a noticeable drop in bird numbers. They’ve called on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to reconsider the park’s future.

While some locals are concerned about the park’s ecological footprint, the council says they’ve taken every precaution. Security measures are in place, with a dedicated guard on patrol after hours to prevent unauthorised use. Moreover, ecological surveys conducted have shown no decline in wetland bird species, and fluctuating swan numbers are attributed to natural causes, including recent avian flu outbreaks.

Supporters of the Aqua Park argue it brings much-needed leisure options and potential revenue for improving local facilities. Council Member Cllr Bronwen Brooks highlighted their commitment to offering diverse leisure activities while safeguarding the environment. The trial will run until September, with a final decision on the park’s future pending further ecological assessments and community feedback.
