Teacher Who Drove Under Influence Escapes Suspension by Claiming He Was Evading Attacker

In a wild twist of events, Justin Scarlett, a former head of chemistry from Canterbury, dodged a teaching ban despite a drink-driving conviction. After being arrested for driving more than double the legal limit, Scarlett told investigators the shocking reason behind his actions: he was fleeing for his life from a knife-wielding attacker. According to Scarlett, the incident happened in Rochester during lockdown, leaving him with no choice but to drive, as public transport was unavailable and he feared being stuck with a dangerous assailant.

Scarlett, who was also dealing with a difficult living situation at the time, shared that the trauma clouded his judgment and led to his uncharacteristic behaviour. Police didn’t find any immediate signs of injury when they stopped him, but Scarlett presented photos said to show his wounds. The Teacher Regulation Authority reviewed his case and concluded that, given the unprecedented circumstances and his belief that he was escaping a life-threatening situation, a teaching ban was not warranted.

Scarlett, now teaching in Wolverhampton and living in Thailand, credits his survival to divine intervention and some Muay Thai skills he picked up in Thailand. Reflecting on the decision, Scarlett shared some eyebrow-raising remarks about the TRA, calling their operations as amusing as watching “a monkey on roller-skates.”
