Exciting news from the Vale of Glamorgan! The council is taking a bold step to promote healthier lifestyles by banning adverts for unhealthy foods in public spaces like bus stops and roadside boards. This initiative is a first for Wales and aims to help people make better-informed food choices by reducing exposure to ads for items high in fat, sugar, and salt.

During a recent meeting, councillors shared powerful personal stories about health transformations. Cllr Gwyn John, now in his 80s, recalled being “vastly overweight” in his 30s and making significant lifestyle changes to improve his health. He urged everyone to look after themselves, saying, “It is about your life and your health.”

Cllr Rhiannon Birch highlighted that many aren’t fully aware of the unhealthy content in what they eat, expressing hope that this ban will empower people to make healthier choices without constant exposure to tempting adverts.

Critically, the ban isn’t about dictating what people can buy or eat. Cllr Lis Burnett explained, “We’re just not going to put pictures of it everywhere.” The focus is on supporting public health and aligning with the council’s value-driven corporate plan.
This move aligns with upcoming regulations approved by the Senedd to restrict the display of unhealthy foods in shops and on websites across Wales, set to take effect next year. It’s all about encouraging healthier communities and tackling health inequalities.
