Heartbreaking news from Swansea: Sam Buchan, a fit and healthy 31-year-old dad, tragically passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest induced by heatstroke during a triathlon. This devastating incident occurred during a scorching summer heatwave with temperatures soaring over 28°C.

Sam, who journeyed nearly 600 miles from Scotland to compete in the Ironman event, was pulled from the water by a vigilant safety team after struggling in the swim portion of the race. Immediate medical attention was provided, but despite their efforts, Sam passed away at Morriston Hospital three days later.
The event itself was held in mid-July and featured a demanding course, including a 1.2-mile swim at Prince of Wales Dock, a 56-mile bike ride through Gower’s coastal roads, and a 13.1-mile run along the scenic Mumbles.

Sam was cherished by his wife Samantha, known affectionately as “Dada Lion” by his daughter Ella, and was adored by many friends and family members. His sudden passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him.

This tragic event marks the second such incident in Swansea within three years, following the 2023 death of grandfather Andrew Ireland during a similar triathlon.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Sam’s family and friends as they navigate this difficult time. The organisers have promised continued support and are immensely grateful to the emergency personnel who acted swiftly. Let’s keep Sam’s loved ones in our hearts and remember the importance of staying safe and aware during extreme weather conditions.
