đ¨ Tinned Tuna Alert! đ¨ Hey parents, ever wonder how much tuna your little ones should really be eating? Food expert Miguel LurueĂąa gives us the lowdown: for adults, it’s up to 6 tins a week, but for kids, just stick to 1. Why? It’s all about mercury levels and keeping those developing brains safe. đ§

Some cities in France, like Paris and Lille, have taken the plunge and banned tuna from school menus over health concerns. Theyâre swapping it out to keep meals healthy and local. Could this be a shift we see more widely?

Mercury levels in tuna can be over three times higher than in fish like cod or sardines, which is why health experts and organisations, including the WHO, suggest keeping an eye on consumptionâespecially for children and pregnant women.
The debate is heating up in Europe. Organisations like Bloom are calling for stricter controls on mercury levels in canned goods, saying current EU standards arenât enough. Over in Spain, some tuna cans have been found to exceed these limits, although on average theyâre within legal bounds.
While no oneâs telling us to stop eating tuna altogether, itâs a reminder to be mindful of whatâs on our kidsâ plates. Would you like to see alternatives in school lunches here in the UK?
