A grand vision for Porthcawl’s Cosy Corner has crumbled, leaving locals with dashed hopes and plenty of questions. Once upon a time, the town buzzed with plans for a stunning £1.6 million Maritime Centre featuring a coastal science hub, a chic café, and a rooftop bar. But alas, things didn’t quite pan out that way.

Audit Wales has shone a light on some ‘basic failings’ in the financial handling of the project, which was initially backed with potential funding from the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund. Credu Charity Ltd took the reins, partnering with the local council, yet unexpectedly hit a dead end when the charity liquidated in 2020, halting the dream in its tracks.

Despite significant funding allocations, rising project costs sounded alarm bells. The Welsh Government eventually withdrew its financial support amid these concerns, aiming to recover its £1.6 million investment. Audit Wales suggests inadequate strategies were in place to manage the project’s risks, which could have flagged issues much earlier.
Even though no charges were brought after a police probe, the saga highlights lapses in responsibility and oversight among involved parties. However, there’s a silver lining! Porthcawl’s Cosy Corner now boasts a fresh £3 million development, complete with a children’s play park, commercial spaces, and a communal canopy. It might not be the grand Maritime Centre once promised, but it brings new vibrancy to the area.
Keep your ears to the ground, folks, as we watch how these lessons shape future projects. Your thoughts?
