James Hook, our very own ex-Wales international and current Ospreys skills coach, has his say on the WRU’s big plans that could see our four professional men’s teams slashed to just two. The WRU calls it ‘optimal,’ but not everyone is on board. The Dragons and the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association aren’t too thrilled about it, and Hook’s got his own ideas.

In a chat on Scrum V’s The Warm Up, Hook reveals a convo with a former Scottish international about Scotland’s two-club model. The takeaway? Four might be too much, but two could be too little. Hook suggests exploring the possibility of three regions. He believes this could help maintain fanbases across Wales instead of just an east-west split.

Hook also emphasises the importance of investing in schools and nurturing young talent. “This isn’t a two-year or five-year plan; it’s a 15 to 20-year vision,” he says. A strong semi-pro league, as in his early days at Neath, is another priority Hook stresses.

Former Wales captain Philippa Tuttiett agrees, warning the WRU against pushing forward without full support. Stats may favour the two-team model, but remember, the heart of the sport lies with the supporters in the stands.

The call is for unity – regions and union must get on the same page. Reflecting on the last decade or so, Hook notes the discord that’s existed. “Whatever comes from this consultation, unity is key,” he adds. Could this be the dawn of a new era, or will it stir more debate? Let us know your thoughts! 🏉💭
