A heartbreaking story from Greenock, Inverclyde, where a father, Neil Canney, tragically lost his life in February 2023. Neil was shot eight times at his doorstep in a horrifying incident that lasted just five seconds. The attack didn’t just stop at his front door; shots were fired into the house, putting the lives of other occupants, including children, at risk.

Fast forward to 2025, seven men have faced justice for this ruthless crime. Jack Benson, Dale Russell, Martin McCusker, Brendan Balloch, Michael Munro, and Kieran Hendry were all found guilty of Neil’s murder, while Kieran Meechan had already admitted his guilt prior to the trial. All have received life sentences, with minimum terms ranging from 17 to 24 years before being eligible for parole.

In court, Lady Drummond didn’t mince her words, labelling the attack as “brutal” and demonstrating “utter indifference.” She acknowledged the heartbreak endured by Neil’s family, especially his children, who now face a future without their father.
Detective Chief Inspector Graham McCreadie and Moira Orr from the Crown Office both emphasised the gravity of the crime and how these convictions should serve as a stern warning to others involved in such acts. Their reckless actions have taken a loved one away from his family and endangered many others.
This story is not just a sobering reminder of the violence that can erupt in our communities, but also a testament to justice being served. Thoughts remain with Neil’s family and friends as they navigate this difficult time. Let this be a reminder that despite the shadows of violence, justice seeks to shine through.
