A dream holiday in Dubai turned into a shocking reality for Dawn Paddock and her three children. Just before their flight back to the UK, they were hit with unexpected news: their stop-over in Doha was suddenly unsafe due to Israeli airstrikes. Dawn, a single mum from Wrexham, was faced with the difficult decision of finding another way home and swiftly choosing safety over savings.

Despite being reassured by the airline that their original flight wasn’t cancelled or delayed, Dawn couldn’t shake the worry of flying through newly volatile airspace. With limited information and guidance, she made the brave decision to cancel the original journey. However, this came at a shocking extra cost, as she had to fork out over £2,000 for a new direct flight with Emirates, funds she initially borrowed from her kids’ savings.

“I couldn’t get any straight answers,” explains Dawn. “Nobody at the airline could assure us it was safe. My children were petrified, having seen the news, and were begging not to fly through Doha.”

Though the additional expense was a hit, Dawn prioritised the feeling of safety for her family. Her kids even pooled their savings together, agreeing that peace of mind was worth the price. In the end, Dawn took a longer route home, bypassing Qatari airspace altogether.
“It cost nearly as much as our entire holiday,” she reflects, “but seeing my children relaxed and happy was invaluable. I have no regrets.”
The lack of clear information at the time of decision-making left Dawn frustrated, especially as no other British passengers could share their insights or fears. While she navigates this unexpected financial challenge, she remains resolute that securing her family’s safety was worth every penny.
