📢 Wales’ 20mph Speed Limit: Two Years On 📉

It’s been two years since Wales rolled out the 20mph speed limit on its roads, sparking fierce debate and becoming the nation’s most-talked-about law. While it ruffled feathers back in the day, the dust has settled, and we’re seeing some impressive results!

🔍 According to the latest data, the number of people injured on Welsh roads has dropped significantly. In 2023, before the law, there were 4,439 casualties. Fast forward to 2024 after implementing the 20mph limit, and that number was down to 4,005. Even more dramatically, road fatalities plummeted from 98 in 2023 to just 14 last year. 🚦

📉 Overall, casualties on 20mph and 30mph roads fell by 25% in the months following the change. Great news for road safety! Plus, motorists are seeing benefits in their wallets. Those in 20mph zones are enjoying lower car insurance premiums, with some saving around £50 on average. 💸
But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Over 134,000 drivers got caught speeding between November 2023 and May 2025, showing there’s still work to do. Enforcement schemes have been in place, allowing many to opt for educational courses over fines. 📈
Despite initial backlash, including a petition with almost 500,000 signatures, the Welsh Government is sticking with the law, though it has offered councils the chance to consult communities on potential changes. In some places, like Wrexham, speed limits have been increased in certain areas—52 spots to be exact—while Cardiff has seen just four changes. 🚗
So, what do you think? Is the 20mph limit here to stay, or could further tweaks be on the horizon? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! 💬
