📢 Shocking End to a Rugby Legend’s Career: “It Blew My Mind”

Rhys Williams, Wales’ most-capped rugby league star, has called it quits—but not quite on his own terms. At 35, you’d think he’d retire with a grand farewell after 17 years of dedicated service and 24 tries in 38 international outings. Instead, he got a voicemail. Yes, you heard that right—a voicemail! 📞

Williams amazingly log on the field, once went viral for looking like Liverpool’s Mo Salah, learned he’d been dropped by the new head coach via a message. “I felt I shouldn’t have been informed that way after everything I’ve done for Wales,” he said, still processing the news. Despite a season-ending battle with sciatica, he was still up for upcoming fixtures against Ireland. Yet, the decision to “promote youth” ended that dream.

Rhys had plans to bow out with a bang after representing Wales a few more times. Now, turning the page, he’ll focus on his new career as a PE teacher in Congleton. He expressed hope for retiring “off the back of playing for Wales” and praised rugby for giving him more than he imagined—friendships, unforgettable memories, and the honour of representing his country.
To every coach and player who’ve been part of his journey, to family and friends who rode the rugby rollercoaster with him, he sends his deepest thanks. And to his wife, he says he couldn’t have done it without her endless support. 👏
So here’s to one incredible journey and a new chapter! 🏉📚
