🎶 Exciting changes are afoot for music lovers in Cardiff! Work on the iconic St David’s Hall has finally commenced, with a brand new roof on the way to replace the old reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete. But, there’s a bit of a question mark hanging over the beloved Cardiff Singer of the World competition, traditionally held at the venue.

The prestigious event has not graced the stage of St David’s Hall since it closed for repairs in 2023, aiming for a grand re-opening in 2027. With the renovations expected to last 18 months, Cardiff Council and the Academy Music Group (AMG) are pushing forward with plans to bring the venue back to life. AMG is spearheading the refurbishment and will also manage the Hall, bringing their expertise from running multiple UK venues.

Councillors are eager to ensure that plans are robust and ready to adapt should there be snags along the way. There’s a lot riding on the project, and the council’s culture chief describes this partnership as an “exciting chapter” for the Hall’s future. Meanwhile, AMG promises a detailed timeline by January to give all the necessary assurances needed to get the ball rolling on event planning.

While there’s still some uncertainty, the mood overall is positive. Fingers crossed the iconic venue will reopen its doors in time to host the Cardiff Singer of the World once again. Only time will tell, but it’s looking like we could be sitting in those familiar seats before we know it, enjoying the sweet sounds of classical music in the heart of Cardiff.
