Fawaz Abu Ataya’s heart aches for Cardiff, a city that once gave him the brightest days of his life. As he reminisces about strolling through Roath Park and the bustling St David’s centre, he’s struck by the stark contrast to his current reality in war-torn Gaza. These memories of a peaceful past keep him going during his darkest times.

Back in 2013, Fawaz moved from Gaza to Cardiff, lured by the beauty of Wales and the opportunity to improve his English at Cardiff University. Those two years of simplicity and kindness from the people around him left a lasting imprint on his heart. From trips to the Global Buffet to friendly chats at Live Lounge, every moment was a treasured experience. A bond with his friend Nas Suleman was particularly special, as Nas and his family welcomed Fawaz into their home and hearts.

Now, Fawaz faces the devastation of conflict. His once beautiful home is now rubble, leaving him and his family of eight living in a tent in central Gaza. They endure the harshest of conditions, struggling with hunger, freezing winters, and constant danger. Despite these hardships, the spirit of friendship remains strong. Nas, far away in Cardiff, is making tireless efforts to raise funds and support for Fawaz and his family through a GoFundMe page.
Reflecting on his time in Cardiff provides Fawaz with a glimmer of hope. Before the war, he dreamt of returning to Cardiff, maybe for a PhD, and offering his children the chance to study abroad. His dream to return remains alive, imagining a walk through Bute Park, this time with his family by his side.
“A heartfelt thank you to the people of Wales for your kindness and support. I hope one day we’ll meet again,” Fawaz shares. If you feel moved to help, you can support Fawaz and his family through the GoFundMe page set up in his name. Every small act of kindness counts in rebuilding lives.
