Wayne Rooney, one of football’s all-time greats, has made a heart-wrenching revelation about his past struggles with alcohol. In a candid chat on the ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents’ podcast, the former Manchester United and England star admitted he might not be here today if it wasn’t for his wife, Coleen.

Rooney spoke openly about his battle with alcohol dependency, which began during his playing days. He recounted going to extreme lengths to hide his drinking from then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson, resorting to eye drops and chewing gum before training sessions. Despite his successful career, Rooney found himself trapped in a cycle of drinking that he couldn’t escape on his own.
He shared, “I was struggling massively with alcohol. I didn’t think I could turn to anyone. I just drank for two days straight, went to training, scored two goals, and then went back to drinking.” It was Coleen who provided the support and stability he desperately needed. “She helped me control that massively,” Rooney admitted. “I honestly believe if she wasn’t there, I’d be dead.”

Looking back, Rooney credits Coleen with helping him navigate those turbulent times. From their early days in Croxteth to having a family of their own, Coleen’s unwavering support has been crucial. Rooney reflects, “She’s done it for 20-odd years and kept me on that path.”
Rooney’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of having a supportive partner, even for those who seem to have it all. Behind the glitz and glamour of football, there’s a deeply personal journey that few see, and for Rooney, it was Coleen who made all the difference.
