Community Volunteers Encouraged to Contribute Towards Park Clean-Up Efforts

Community heroes asked to pay to pick up litter? You must be joking! That’s the shocking claim from Councillor Yvonne Wright at Bury Council. Devoted volunteers from green groups are reportedly being told to cover their own insurance when they step up to beautify our parks and public spaces. Councillor Wright, who champions these civic pride champions, shared how one group, Tottington Civic Pride, was shocked by the request.

“In all my years, I’ve never seen anything like it. Our small group of pensioners dedicate hours weekly to keep our town tidy, and now they’re being asked to pay for public liability insurance for their voluntary services?” Wright exclaimed.

Volunteers aren’t thrilled either. They argue that other charitable organisations don’t require such fees. “Bury Hospice doesn’t charge their volunteers, why should we?” questioned Wright, urging the council to reconsider.

During a council meeting, Wright passionately called for a rethink. “These volunteers offer their time and tools for free. Why burden them further?” she questioned.

Responding to the uproar, Cabinet Member Alan Quinn assured residents that the council values its volunteers. He suggested that the insurance dilemma is being addressed, explaining that groups with a council employee present are covered but those working solo aren’t.

Quinn promised to get to the bottom of the situation. “Our community groups, like the Friends of Springwater Park, are essential in keeping our parks vibrant and clean. Their efforts are invaluable,” he added.

As the council discusses solutions, community members are eagerly waiting to see if the decision will be reversed. After all, without these dedicated volunteers, beautiful parks like Burrs Country Park and Philips Park might not look as inviting! Let’s hope the council sides with its local heroes soon. 🌿✨ #CommunitySpirit #VolunteerHeroes
