A 29-year-old Cardiff resident, Daniel McQuade, found himself in hot water when police discovered nearly 9kg of cannabis at his home, claiming it was simply for his own use. With value estimates hitting up to £46,000, the authorities weren’t quite buying his story.

The plot thickens as the police unearthed scales, zip lock bags, and £225 in cash during their search. Despite McQuade’s insistence that the stash was personal, the forensic evidence, including his fingerprints all over the goods, painted a different picture.

McQuade, who also has a prior conviction for drink driving, pled guilty to possession with intent to supply a Class B drug. His defence argued that he was remorseful and not involved in any large-scale operation, although he confessed to selling directly to users.

With a challenging personal life, being the carer for his mother who battles mental health issues, McQuade claimed that cannabis had actually been beneficial in his life. However, the judge didn’t see it that way, stating, “The court often sees the long-term consequences of this drug.”

Ultimately, despite his explanations, McQuade was sentenced to 12 months behind bars. 🌿❌
