🔍 Discovering Secrets in the Ice! ❄️

An unexpected find emerged from Greenland’s icy depths as NASA’s radar images revealed a hidden relic from the Cold War era. The surprise discovery? Camp Century, a US military base nicknamed “the city under ice,” buried 100ft beneath the surface.
Originally built between 1959 and 1960, this 65-year-old facility consists of 21 underground tunnels stretching over 9,800ft and was designed with then-groundbreaking technology. Its construction involved an arduous 70-hour sledge journey to haul 6,000 tonnes of materials across the ice.

While its scientific contributions were notable, uncovering prehistoric ice and earth samples, it served a more secretive purpose—Project Iceworm, an ambitious plan to store ballistic missiles under Greenland’s ice sheet. Although the plans didn’t come to fruition, and Camp Century ceased operations in 1967, its tale of hidden history continues to captivate.
Remarkably, the base wasn’t entirely forgotten. Even its nuclear reactor was removed post-closure, yet 47,000 gallons of nuclear waste remain, now slowly being revealed by melting ice.
William Colgan, a climate expert, speculates that parts of Camp Century could resurface by 2090, significantly due to climate change. This icy enigma is a striking symbol of nature and history’s intertwined narratives.
