đźš—đź’¬ Big changes are coming to parking in Cardiff, and opinions are divided! The city council has just approved plans to charge more for parking permits for hefty vehicles like SUVs over 2.4 tonnes. And, the threshold will eventually lower to 2,000kg for non-electric cars. Why? Heavier vehicles are said to cause more road wear, higher emissions, and potential safety risks.

But what do the locals think? We wandered through Canton, one of the city’s busiest parking spots, and couldn’t find many fans of the new plan. Judith James believes it’s high time something is done to discourage large cars, pointing out issues like road damage and safety. While Janet Mahoney feels the public transport system just isn’t reliable enough to ditch the car.

Students and businesses aren’t too happy either. Builder Jeremy Taylor argues for some flexibility for work vehicles, while Andrew Taylor criticises the plan as short-sighted, especially with Cardiff’s growing student population.
The city’s parking strategy will also split Cardiff into three zones, with varied parking restrictions, and some areas won’t allow any resident parking permits. Sounds like a lot! 🏙️
Sally Baker, a blue badge holder, also shared her concerns, stating that the changes seem like a way for the council to rake in more cash. “I need my SUV for my needs,” she said, voicing the worry of many reliant on larger vehicles.
So, what’s your take, Cardiff? Are these changes a step forward or just a way to dig into drivers’ pockets? Share your thoughts! 🤔💸 #CardiffParking #CarDebate #LocalVoices
