📢 Exciting update from Welsh Water! Earlier this year, the company faced a hefty £1.35 million fine for over 800 sewage discharge breaches. However, following a successful appeal at Caernarfon Crown Court, this fine has now been significantly reduced to £120,000. 🎉

The water company, which admitted to not properly monitoring water quality at 300 sites, attributed the lapses to internal restructuring, IT hiccups, and the challenges posed by the pandemic. Despite these challenges, they promptly admitted their shortcomings and apologised at the earliest opportunity. 💧

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) reported noticeable lapses in self-monitoring data, with over 600 breaches recorded in the 2020 report. While NRW flagged “avoidable” inadequacies, it’s important to note that these represented just a tiny fraction (around 1%) of Welsh Water’s annual submissions. 📊
A representative from Welsh Water expressed relief over the reduced fine, assuring that by saving on penalties, they can better invest in services and environmental efforts. Being a not-for-profit organisation, they rely solely on customer income, so every penny counts towards improving and protecting the environment. 🌍
While no direct environmental harm was identified in this case, Welsh Water acknowledges the importance of compliance and is committed to doing better. Let’s hope for improved processes moving forward, ensuring cleaner and safer water for all! 💪
