A shocking case concluded at Cardiff Crown Court as Mark Cain, a 38-year-old warehouse worker, has been sentenced to a 23-year extended term behind bars. Accused of committing a horrifying “campaign” of rape against a young boy in the Vale of Glamorgan, Cain was convicted of multiple offences, including four counts of raping a child under 13. The court heard that Cain forced his victim to watch pornographic material, actions the judge labelled as the “calculating actions of a predatory man.”
Cain, who has eight previous convictions for 22 offences, shouted abuse from the dock upon hearing his sentence, which includes 20 years in custody and a subsequent three-year licence period. The judge emphasised that this severe ruling was necessary to protect the public from the danger he poses. Cain will be registered as a sex offender for life and is subject to an indefinite order to restrict his access to children.
In a powerful statement read by prosecutor Matthew Cobbe, the victim expressed the impact of Cain’s abuse on his life, stating that it created a “hole in the person” he has become as an adult. However, he also shared his sense of pride for bravely coming forward and noted how the legal process had begun to foster a “healthier mindset.”
Detective Constable Ameila Lewis of South Wales Police praised the victim’s courage, expressing hope that this justice will bring some comfort, knowing the public has been shielded from Cain’s cruelty.
