Nestled in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia), the historic Pont-y-Pair bridge in Betws-y-Coed is known for its breathtaking beauty. But lately, it’s become a hotbed of daring antics and social disturbances. Why the fuss? People are embracing the age-old tradition of jumping off the bridge into the twirling Afon Llugwy below.
This thrill is not without its dangers. Recent reports suggest that groups, driven by an adventurous spirit and perhaps a bit too much bravado, have disrupted local peace. Youngsters have been spotted causing chaos, leaving a trail of disruption, and displaying threatening behaviour as they leap from the bridge’s 20ft height.
Once protected by a Police Public Space Protection Order, the measures have lapsed, leading to a spike in these stout-hearted plunges mainly fuelled by the summer sun. Though meant for the bold, the practice has attracted an unwanted crowd, bringing along anti-social behaviour issues that the community is striving to manage.
Local authorities acknowledge the vibrant history of ‘tombstoning’ here but are concerned about an uptick in unruly visitors contributing to social disorder. In a bid to restore harmony, officials held a multi-agency meeting to discuss the possibility of enforcing restrictions once more.
The situation escalated when a recent influx of young visitors made waves, quite literally, by disrupting the tranquility of Betws-y-Coed. Reckless jumps resulted in some serious injuries, notably highlighted by a 24-year-old’s dramatic experience featured in BBC’s SOS: Extreme Rescues.
In response, Conwy Council is diving into existing byelaws to see what can be done. The local community council shows no signs of backing down, eyeing a revival of CCTV monitoring to keep a watchful eye over the famous site.
