As part of Flood Action Week, we’re all being urged to take two key steps to better prepare our homes and businesses against future flooding. First, sign up for flood alerts specific to your area, whether it’s river, coastal, or groundwater risks. Check if your locality is covered and get registered!

Next, craft your very own ‘flood plan’. This prep includes assembling a flood kit filled with essentials like crucial documents, waterproof clothing, water, and any medications you might need. Also, make considerations for your pets and have vital contact details at the ready, such as home insurance info, to speed up your response if the worst happens.

Kelly Ostler-Coyle from Flood Re highlights the importance of property-level resilience for saving money and reducing the emotional toll flooding can wreak. With climate change leading to wetter winters and unpredictable weather, taking proactive steps is a no-brainer.

The Environment Agency and Government are channelling £2.65 billion into strengthening our flood defences, eyeing completion by March 2026. They’re also dispatching 260 portable pumps to manage floodwater efficiently.
