A farmer’s dodgy dealings have raised huge concerns after it was revealed he earned over Ā£68,000 breeding puppies in deplorable conditions. John Gibbon, from Llanelli, has been caught red-handed having bred and sold puppies online despite not holding the required licence.

RSPCA inspectors initially discovered the shocking situation at Gibbon’s farm in July 2021. Dogs were being kept in cramped, makeshift pens with barely any water, ventilation or access to exercise. Despite being advised on necessary changes, multiple follow-up visits showed no improvement, pushing authorities to issue a formal improvement notice.

Although Gibbon pleaded guilty to his illegal operations between 2019 and 2022, it’s been a long fight to ensure justice for these pups. The case highlighted that he and his daughter breached Section 13 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Eventually, the prosecution against his daughter was dropped, resulting in just a caution.

At the sentencing, Gibbon received a 12-month conditional discharge with further financial penalties. Fortunately, he claims he now has no intentions of returning to dog breeding. Let’s hope this serves as a strong message to anyone else involved in illegal puppy farming—our animals deserve better!
