**Alan Sheehan Confirmed as Swansea City Head Coach on Three-Year Deal**
Swansea City have officially confirmed Alan Sheehan as the club’s new head coach, following an impressive spell as interim manager. Sheehan, aged 38, has penned a three-year contract with the Championship side after steering the team to a remarkable turnaround since stepping in for Luke Williams earlier this year.
The appointment brings to an end several weeks of speculation over Swansea’s managerial position. Sheehan originally took charge in February after Williams was relieved of his duties, and he made an immediate impact, stabilising a club that had previously been drifting dangerously close to the relegation zone. Notably, this isn’t Sheehan’s first interim stint; he had been overlooked previously when Michael Duff was dismissed back in December 2023.
Since his installation as caretaker, Sheehan has amassed 23 points in just 12 matches. This spell included a superb five-match winning run, which only came to a halt with a narrow defeat against Millwall last Saturday. Prior to Sheehan’s arrival, the Swans endured a dismal stretch—losing seven of nine matches—which had left fans and the board deeply concerned about the club’s prospects.
Under Sheehan’s stewardship, however, Swansea have not only moved away from relegation danger but are now mathematically assured of a top-half finish, regardless of the outcome of their final fixture at home to Oxford United. The transformation has been nothing short of impressive, and it has firmly underpinned Sheehan’s case for the top job.
“It’s a privilege to be at this football club and now I have the honour of officially being the head coach,” Sheehan shared, expressing gratitude and ambition for his new role. He added, “There’s been a really good feeling around the place… we’re at a really good point to keep moving forward.”
Swansea’s Director of Football, Richard Montague, stated the club had carried out an “extensive and thorough process” to identify and appoint their new head coach, considering candidates both domestically and internationally. Montague commented, “We’ve been very impressed with Alan since he’s taken over as caretaker head coach for a second time. We believe he’s the right candidate to take this club to the next level.”
Tom Gorringe, the club’s CEO, echoed this optimism, noting Sheehan’s strong leadership and tactical awareness. “Alan has shown strong leadership and tactical acumen during his time as caretaker head coach. Collectively, we believe he is the right person to take Swansea City forward and build on our progress,” said Gorringe.
Attention now inevitably turns to Sheehan’s backroom staff. Mark Fotheringham and Richard Stearman were both added to the coaching line-up in March, and Sheehan has praised their contributions during the club’s recent resurgence. However, he indicated the coaching structure is still under review, explaining: “That’s a process that’s ongoing… there might be changes with the lads I’ve brought in as we look to the future. Announcements should follow over the coming weeks.”
Sheehan’s permanent appointment could also have wider ramifications on contract negotiations within the squad. There is speculation that defender Harry Darling, whose future at the Liberty Stadium had seemed uncertain, might be more likely to renew his contract with Sheehan at the helm. Sheehan is also keen on retaining veteran midfielder Joe Allen, while there is hope among supporters that Lewis O’Brien, who has impressed during his loan spell, might yet be persuaded to stay.
O’Brien reportedly enjoyed his experience in south Wales and flourished under Sheehan’s guidance. While discussions over a possible extension are still in early stages, both player and club seem open to an ongoing relationship.
For Swansea City supporters, Sheehan’s appointment represents a significant statement of intent—a move towards continuity and steady development after a period of turbulence. The club and its fans now look forward, with cautious optimism, to what the next three years might hold under his leadership. Further details and announcements regarding the club’s set-up and squad are anticipated in the near future.
