If you’re on Universal Credit, Employment Support Allowance, or Incapacity Benefit, keep an ear out for unexpected phone calls! The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has given us an update on Work Capability Assessments (WCA), which help determine your benefit amount based on your ability to work.

According to DWP Minister Stephen Timms, tens of thousands are in line for these evaluations with service provider Maximus. As of October 31, 74,000 new applicants and 40,000 existing claimants were waiting for their WCA appointments. It includes those at different stages, from submitting questionnaires to gathering medical evidence.

But what if your appointment gets cancelled? Timms reassures us that this is quite rare. However, unexpected situations like missing files, ill health professionals, or long wait times on the day can lead to cancellations.

Before cancelling, Maximus must call you to explain the situation and try to rearrange. From September 2024 to October 2025, 640 new and 250 existing applicants faced one cancellation, while 60 new and 20 existing claimants had two. A few unfortunately dealt with more than two cancellations.

So, if you’re expecting your assessment, keep that phone close! 📱 It’s Maximus’ job to get in touch if anything changes. Let’s hope their efforts keep disruptions to a minimum! 💪
