⚠️ Safety concerns at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot plant! ⚠️

Tata Steel is currently on trial over alleged safety lapses following a serious incident at its Port Talbot site. The case stems from an event where toxic gases from a blast furnace were released in an area where staff were working, resulting in two men being hospitalised.

The Health and Safety Executive is prosecuting, alleging that Tata Steel failed to ensure a safe environment for its employees. It’s claimed that on February 14, 2022, furnace gases containing up to 25% carbon monoxide were vented dangerously, exposing workers to concentrations far beyond safe levels. Alarmingly, some fixed gas monitors weren’t working during the incident, leading to delayed evacuations.

The trial is taking place at Swansea Crown Court, where the prosecution argued that Tata’s emergency procedures were deficient and risk assessments inadequate. Notably, after the incident, Tata revised these procedures, indicating that further safety measures were possible.
While Tata Steel denies the charges of failing to protect both employees and contractors, the court will decide if more could have been done to prevent this risk. The hearing is expected to last two weeks.
Stay safe, everyone! 🏭🌫️
