Heartbreaking news from Nottingham as an inquest has found neglect led to the tragic death of 15-year-old Zara Cheesman, an A* student with dreams of becoming a human rights lawyer. Zara, from the Mapperley Park area, passed away at the Queen’s Medical Centre due to meningitis. The coroner concluded gross failings by the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) contributed to her death.

Zara initially visited A&E with symptoms mistaken for norovirus, but sadly, signs of meningitis were missed. The next day, despite being confused, she wasn’t taken to hospital, which could have saved her life. The coroner criticised the ambulance technicians for not following protocol or considering the seriousness of her condition.
EMAS has since apologised for missing the opportunity to provide the care Zara needed. Keeley Sheldon, director of quality at EMAS, expressed deep regret and vowed to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Zara’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Let’s hope lessons are learned to ensure no more young lives are lost in similar circumstances. 🕊️ #JusticeForZara #NHS #LessonsLearned
