That’s the reality for families in Tyldesley, as gigantic steel warehouses dominate the landscape just metres from their homes. These colossal buildings are part of a 350,000 sq ft industrial development, and residents are not happy about their new neighbours.
Locals feel blindsided by the sheer size of the structures, which have been likened to having a cruise ship docked in their backyards. The plan will eventually see four mega-warehouses built, with two of them reaching up to 60ft high! Delivery giant Whistl has already nabbed one of these behemoths, setting up shop with a hefty 15-year lease.
Residents worry the monstrous developments will tank property values and swallow up sunlight. Many, like John Peters, a retired teacher, are considering moving. “It’s a total shock when you walk out the door. The enormity of the thing just strikes you,” he lamented.
Paula Boardman, a mum of two, says her once-stunning views are now “quite upsetting.” She added, “We thought the buildings would be smaller, but once the framework went up, it was humungous!”
Even though the local council insists proper planning processes were followed, and landscaping will be added to soften the blow, the affected community is not convinced. Steve Retford, a retired police officer, feels an overwhelming “sense of injustice.”
Campaign groups are forming as over 200 residents unite to oppose the gigantic project, feeling left out of initial consultations. With concerns about market value, potential structural damage, and disrupted dreams of peaceful living, the community is rallying together to fight back.
