Heartbreaking news from Italy as Tamara D’Acunto, 45, becomes the second casualty from a sandwich gone horribly wrong. A quick bite turned into tragedy when Tamara ate a sausage and turnip greens panini from a food truck in Calabria, suffering from a severe case of botulism shortly after.
This follows the death of Luigi Di Sarno, 52, who also succumbed to the poisoning. The botulism outbreak has hospitalised 17 others, all of whom ate from the same vendor in picturesque Diamante. Symptoms kicked in rapidly, within 24 to 48 hours, for those affected. Botulism occurs due to the neurotoxic assault from Clostridium botulinum bacteria—scary stuff given it can be fatal in roughly 10% of cases!
The situation has ignited a swift investigation by Italian authorities, who have seized the notorious sandwich truck and are scrutinising nine individuals linked to the business. Shockingly, jars of broccoli in oil—possibly the contamination source—have been confiscated.
In response to this alarming threat, the region has activated its emergency protocols, with exclusive access granted to a vital antitoxin serum held by the Lombardy Poison Control Centre.
