π Heads up, Wales! Tonight might just be your chance to catch the dazzling Northern Lights right in our own skies. The Met Office has announced that a plasma cloud is zooming towards Earth, possibly extending the show until September 3rd. π

This celestial spectacle, known as the aurora borealis, usually graces more northern regions but thanks to a recent solar event, folks as far south as Wales might witness this beautiful display. Imagine vibrant waves of greens, purples, and pinks lighting up the night!

The optimal viewing time is predicted to be between 9 PM and midnight tonight, but these magical lights might dance across the sky until around 3 AM. For the best viewing experience, head to a spot where the skies are dark and clear. π

However, keep an eye on the bright moon, as it may reduce the clarity in some areas. Fingers crossed for clear skies!
The Northern Lights result from a solar eruption of charged particles called a coronal mass ejection (CME). When these particles meet Earth’s magnetic field, they collide with gas molecules in our atmosphere, creating the mesmerising lights.
We’re approaching what scientists call the ‘solar maximum’, a period when solar activity increases, making these aurora sightings more frequent. π
So grab a blanket, find a cosy outdoor spot, and see if you can catch a glimpse of one of nature’s most stunning displays. If you snap any great pics, feel free to share them with us in the comments below! πΈβ¨
Happy sky-gazing, everyone!
