Dame Patricia Routledge, the unforgettable Hyacinth Bucket from *Keeping Up Appearances*, has passed away at the age of 96. Her sparkling performances and larger-than-life characters brought joy to millions.
Born in Birkenhead, Patricia’s journey to become a beloved star started with her love for drama at university. Her career spanned decades, dazzling audiences on stage, TV, and in films. A true star of musical theatre, she wowed on Broadway, earning a Tony Award in 1968 and an Olivier Award in 1988.
While many of us knew her as the hilariously snooty Hyacinth, Patricia’s talent was boundless. She graced the stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and brought iconic roles to life on screen, like the sharp-witted Hetty Wainthropp and memorable characters in Alan Bennett’s *Talking Heads*.
Her dedication to the arts earned her an OBE in 1993, a CBE in 2004, and she was honoured as a Dame in 2017. Patricia never let go of her passion for acting, even as she aged, famously saying her involvement in acting was total.
Her fans, whether old or young, adored her for her uncanny ability to boss around her way right into our hearts. She paved her own path, becoming a national treasure along the way. Dame Patricia, thank you for the laughs and the memories. You will be dearly missed. 💔
