We’re heartbroken to share the passing of Paul Sloots, a beloved family man from Port Talbot who bravely battled mesothelioma, a cruel cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Diagnosed in May 2024, Paul, who was affectionately known as ‘Dad’ by his granddaughter Tegan, was tragically taken from us less than a year later.

During his career in building demolition, Paul often removed asbestos from pipework – an exposure that would later prove fatal. Reflecting on his life, Tegan recalls a strong, loving figure who stepped up as a fatherly rock after the loss of his wife in 2012.

“Paul was an amazing, happy, family-oriented man,” Tegan shared. “I have so many fond memories, like our fishing trips and the way he would dry my hair as a child. He was always there, every night, for a cup of tea. Now, there’s a huge void in our lives.”

Mesothelioma turned their world upside down, making his last days full of suffering and pain that was agonising to witness. With his lawyer Sarah James, Paul sought justice and received a settlement from former employers, an acknowledgment of the silent danger he’d faced at work.

“Sarah was incredible – professional yet caring. I’m grateful for how she helped us find answers and hold those accountable who caused so much heartache,” Tegan said.

As this family mourns, they urge anyone exposed to asbestos to seek understanding of their legal rights. “Employers must be held accountable for the loss faced by so many families,” stresses Tegan.

Remembering Paul, we too reflect on the silent battles unseen, advocating for awareness and justice for those affected by asbestos-related illnesses. Fly high, dear king, your legacy of love and strength lives on through your family. 💛
