Remembering Lord Taverne: A Life of Public Service 🌟
Today, we say farewell to a true political legend. Liberal Democrat peer Lord Taverne has passed away peacefully at 97. Known affectionately as Dick Taverne, he played a key role as a Treasury minister during a pivotal time in the UK’s history, being instrumental in the transition to decimal currency and the introduction of the iconic 50p coin.
His remarkable career saw him boldly step away from the Labour party in 1973, to run as a Democratic Labour candidate, showcasing his passionate pro-European stance. Despite losing his seat later on, he continued his impactful journey, joining the Social Democratic Party and ultimately becoming a beloved Liberal Democrat peer.

A founding figure of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, Dick’s legacy in promoting thoughtful economic debate is one that continues to resonate today. He leaves behind his cherished wife of 70 years, Janice, and his daughters Suzanna and Caroline.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey remembers him as a “passionate, principled, and thoughtful colleague,” while Lord Purvis highlights his unwavering commitment to European integration and fairness. Dick’s life reminds us of what politics can achieve at its finest.
We’ll miss you, Lord Taverne, but your incredible dedication and energy will continue to inspire us all. 🌍❤️
Thoughts are with his family and friends during this time. Let’s honour his memory by upholding the values he held dear. 🌟
