Boris Johnson has admitted that the Covid-19 lockdowns might have been a bit too much! Reflecting on the lockdown measures during a session at the Covid inquiry, the former Prime Minister commented on the complexity of the rules, especially for children. He believes the measures were possibly too intricate and all-encompassing. Remember the ‘rule of six’? It might have all gone a step too far!

Education was a hot topic, with Johnson discussing school closures and their impact on kids. Although education wasn’t directly under his control due to devolved powers, he mentioned that shutting schools should be an absolute last resort. It’s interesting to note that he found the idea of closing schools “a nightmare” and hoped it wouldn’t be necessary. Yet, planning happened behind the scenes, with conversations about potential closures emerging as early as February 2020.

Despite the debates on preparedness, Johnson insists there wasn’t a neglect of duties when it came to planning for these closures, even acknowledging the overwhelming speed of events back then. The inquiry also touched upon comments from former education secretary, Sir Gavin Williamson, about the rapid decision change regarding schools closing in March 2020.

Johnson’s reflections add to ongoing discussions on how things were handled during the pandemic and what could be done differently in the future. Do you think we could have approached it differently? Let’s chat in the comments! 🗨️
