Ysgol Heol Goffa in Llanelli is celebrating a fantastic report from Estyn inspectors, even after navigating a challenging period! Despite the older building limiting facilities, the inspector’s report praises the strong bonds between staff and students, creating a nurturing, ambitious environment. Pupil numbers have surged from 77 to 127 since 2017, highlighting the school’s popularity and success.
Outdoor learning and activities like the Duke of Edinburgh Award, skiing, and community projects shine brightly as the school’s strengths. And let’s not forget Dennis the school dog, who nearly nabbed the School Dog of the Year award!
While the current building limits some activities, there’s hope on the horizon. After initially shelving plans due to costs, the council is moving forward to build a new 150-place facility, pending approval. This upgrade promises a more accessible, enriched environment for all students.
The Estyn report lauded the school’s leadership and staff, noting the wide range of learning experiences offered and the dedicated wellbeing team that tailors support to students’ needs. Many pupils show significant improvements in behaviour and communication over time.
The lack of a school nurse was noted as an area for improvement, along with the need for better equipment and facilities. Yet, the dedication of school governors and partnerships with community groups showcase deep connections and effort to boost student wellbeing.
Headteacher Ceri Hopkins and education director Owain Lloyd are thrilled with the report and are committed to addressing the highlighted areas for improvement.
