🍂 Autumn is almost here! 🍂 Get ready as September 22 marks the autumn equinox, the day that officially kicks off the season in the Northern Hemisphere. This special day means the sun shines equally on both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, giving us nearly equal hours of daylight and night. After this date, the UK will start to experience longer nights and shorter days – perfect for those cosy evenings in!

According to Dr Shyam Balaji from King’s College London, on 22 September, the Earth’s tilt aligns just right, so both hemispheres get a fair share of sunlight and darkness. While we embrace autumn, our friends in the Southern Hemisphere will be stepping into spring.
The equinox is part of Earth’s natural rhythm, based on its orbit around the Sun. While equinoxes help us welcome autumn and spring, solstices bring in summer and winter when the Earth’s tilt is at its peak.

As we move deeper into autumn, expect shorter days and cooler weather. By late October, we’ll turn the clocks back an hour on the last Sunday (October 26), which means an extra hour in bed! However, this also means shorter days as we switch back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Daylight saving time is meant to maximise daylight hours during summer. There’s an ongoing debate about whether it reduces energy use and benefits our health by encouraging outdoor activities, but some argue darker mornings can be inconvenient.
No matter what you think, make sure to enjoy the vibrant colours of autumn, grab your favourite jumper, and enjoy the season’s cosy vibes! 🌟
