Caerphilly Castle’s Neighboring Office Block to be Demolished in Redevelopment Initiative

Exciting changes could soon be coming to Caerphilly! The once-neglected office block, Llys Ifor, right next to the stunning Caerphilly Castle, might finally be making way for something new. Planning permission for the redevelopment of this site was granted last year, paving the way for Wales and West Housing to launch plans for 29 flats specifically for those over 55.

Agents at Asbri Planning have shared details about the proposed demolition, highlighting steps like asbestos removal and the mechanical takedown of the structure. The aim is to leave the site “clean and tidy” once completed. However, there might be a temporary inconvenience as the public footpath on Crescent Road’s northern side may close for a week to set up necessary protective scaffolding.

Interestingly, Cllr Lindsay Whittle has been quite vocal about the situation, advocating for the council to take more decisive action. He questions why such an unused eyesore has been allowed to linger, when an area opposite a landmark like Windsor Castle wouldn’t face the same fate. He pushes for the council to utilise their powers to tidy up the site and make decisive moves swiftly.

The council, on the other hand, has indicated they’re exploring routes to bring the Llys Ifor site into the broader regeneration plans for Caerphilly. Initially, the development was meant to include around 29 high-quality apartments for over-55s, a retail space, and even a rest area for coach drivers! Such plans could enhance local housing and even boost the local economy, making the most of its prime location near the town centre and the iconic castle.
