The decision wasn’t without its controversies, as some locals raised concerns about noise and traffic disrupting their quiet Sundays. Cllr Jayne Cowan voiced worries about how nearby homes, especially those near the deli’s outdoor dining area, might be affected. However, supporters, including local MP Anna McMorrin and MS Julie Morgan, argued that this move will bring a fresh opportunity for everyone to enjoy a beloved independent business, adding to Rhiwbina village’s unique charm.
Council officers recommended the approval, believing Sundays won’t be noticeably different from other days. Cllr Garry Hunt highlighted it’s puzzling to view Sunday as particularly problematic when the other days ran smoothly.
Owners Rupert and Fran Sykes are thrilled, saying that aligning their opening days with other local businesses ensures a brighter future for Snails Deli. The final vote saw nine councillors in favour, with one abstention.
